Critics Lambaste California Schools’ New “Diversity Math”

Mathematicians, experts, and educators across California are sounding the alarm over the state Department of Education’s proposed new “diversity math” curriculum, warning in an open letter that the scheme will “devastate” the more than 6 million victims trapped in government schools. It seems officials are moving ahead with the “Mathematics Framework Curriculum” anyway.

Among other concerns, the nearly 1,000 experts in math instruction and application said that the bizarre curriculum was heavy on controversial ideology but devoid of effective teaching in mathematics. Far from producing a fairer world, it will simply result in dumbing down the state’s population, the experts warned in the open letter to California officials including Gov. Gavin Newsom.

“For all the rhetoric in this framework about equity, social justice, environmental care and culturally appropriate pedagogy, there is no realistic hope for a more fair, just, equal and well-stewarded society if our schools uproot long-proven, reliable and highly effective math methods and instead try to build a mathless Brave New World on a foundation of unsound ideology,” warned the experts and educators.

The signatories behind the letter warning of impending disaster if the program moves forward include leading professors from top universities in California — all of them extremely liberal — in the fields ranging from math and physics to computer science and engineering. Numerous teachers, business leaders and venture capitalists signed on, too.

“Mathematics is the international language of science,” warned teacher Lee Ohanian in a piece for Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. “The view that mathematics pedagogy is racist is an insult to all those non-Whites and non-Westerners who have successfully trained generations of students, who have mentored new PhD mathematicians, and whose research findings underlie some of the most important technological advances.”

On the bright side, it would be hard for what passes as “math education” in the “land of fruits and nuts” to get any more terrible. According to federal data compiled by the U.S. Department of Education, only 15 percent of Hispanic children and 10 percent of Black children in government schools even meet basic proficiency standards as it is. Even with the new program, it would be hard to sink too much lower than that.

Despite silly claims that actual math promotes “white supremacy,” California children of Asian descent score the best. And as Ohanian pointed out in his piece ridiculing the state’s proposed “diversity” math, children in Communist China score two years ahead in math compared to children in America’s best performing state — and the Chinese children learn using the traditional math that unhinged ideologues in California ludicrously portray as a tool of white racism.

The letter, published by the Independent Institute, blasted the scheme, saying it would “rob all Californians, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, who always suffer most when schools fail to teach their students.” Civilization itself is at stake in the broader battle here, they warned.

Noting that the proposed curriculum would “de-mathematize math,” the signatories slammed the “fringe teaching methods,” the distracting from math with “environmental and social justice” propaganda, the focus on “contributions that historically marginalized people have made to mathematics” instead of actual math, and much more. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

The controversy over the proposed new math scheme comes shortly after the state sparked widespread national outrage and ridicule by mandating a highly controversial new “ethnic studies model curriculum.” Among other concerns, the curriculum forces children elementary school to chant to the pagan Aztec deities of cannibalism, war and human sacrifice in order to achieve “critical consciousness.”

At this point, it almost seems like California’s “education” bureaucrats are actually hoping to drive out the remaining families still using the government’s indoctrination camps even faster than they are fleeing already. Anybody who still has their precious children in these institutions is begging for disaster — and not just ensuring that their children will be unable to read or do math. Fortunately, the exodus from public “education” is accelerating.
